Our Story
In 2007, a group of community members met regularly to find solutions to the community’s lack of affordable housing. They realized that it was having a negative effect on families and the community as a whole. Recognizing the need for healthy housing must be available to families of every economic level, in 2008 they formed McPherson Housing Coalition, Inc. And so, MHC began providing affordable housing opportunities to families in the community.
Our desire to help the underserved has not changed and continues to be our goal. Not only do we work to meet immediate housing and safety needs, but we also work with clients to move past current situations, toward housing and financial stability.
Today, the organization sponsors the county-wide Brush Up Mac event every spring. Under the Emergency Solutions Grant from HUD, the Homeless Prevention, Rapid Rehousing Programs, and Emergency Shelter Component help low-income families. Our TBRA program fills the gap when eligible families need assistance to pay rent.
In addition, MHC has sponsored two low-income housing tax-credit properties. We continue to look for opportunities to provide low-income housing for the community. What’s the answer? An apartment building? Tiny houses? Low-income rentals as part of new housing tracts? The possibilities are exciting – and challenging. The aim is to create a community where everyone can afford a decent place to live and take pride in their neighborhood.
The availability of affordable, good-quality homes is the solution to our county wide problem of inadequate housing. This is how MHC is addressing the county wide problem.
